A True Endgame System

Owning an 82 and a Supercap, you’ve probably gone through a few upgrades in your time. You know a 52 is worth it but it’s hard to justify the cost. This is why we have created a sensible middle ground alternative, taking you most of the way towards the sound of a 52 without splashing out upwards of £2000 and saving you the hassle of wading through the buy and sell market.

A Refined and Laid Back Sound

Using an 82 with a SuperCap, Naim’s design restricts you to only 4 of the available power rails. With careful engineering, we remove this restriction and allow your system to access the 10 of the power rails available, unleashing its full potential. You will experience a more refined and laid back sound, similar to a 52 without impacting on Naims signature sound.

Increase the Resale Value

Most modified amps can only be sold into niche markets, leaning a challenge should you later decide to sell. Our modification removes this challenge by being designed by our ex-Naim engineer with complete backwards compatibility, ensuring that when you do come to sell, any prospective buyer could still use it as a regular 82.

Owning an 82 and a Supercap, you’ve probably gone through a few upgrades in your time. You know a 52 is worth it but it’s hard to justify the cost. This is why we have created a sensible middle ground alternative, taking you 80% of the way towards the sound of a 52 without splashing out upwards of £2000 and saving you the hassle of wading through the buy and sell market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly do you do?

The 82 was only designed to take 4 rails of power which is why you need to use 2 SNAIC cables to power it. But the Supercap has much more to offer.

We exchange the link plug for a 10-pin socket, and wire it internally (to Naim quality standards) to the individual sections. The 82 is then no longer sharing 4 rails of power between its various circuits and now has access to 10.

We then supply you with a special burndy cable to connect the Supercap to the 82 in a way that doesn’t effect how it worked previously. You’ll then get a manual and link plugs so you (or it’s future owner) can use in pretty much any configuration you choose!

Modded vs Stock 82

Will this work with other amps?

Yes, so far we believe this will be possible on the 32, 32.5, 72, 102 and 282. However, as it has only been performed on 82s so far we may require a little more time with it.

How does this compare to similar modifications on the market?

To our knowledge, there is only one other comparable modification on the market. I won’t mention their name, but the difference with ours is that instead of changing the chassis completely and locking the amp to a Supercap, we modify the current chassis, keeping your serial number intact and allowing it to work with other power supply configurations such as direct from the poweramp, from a Hicap, two Hicaps or 10 rails of a Supercap.

It is also being worked on by Ex-Naim Engineers, whose expertise can’t be overlooked or underestimated as the work will be carried out to the same high technical standards the unit was originally built to.

Will this mean I can get rid of the NAPSC?

The short answer is no, we are able to configure it in such a way that you could take the digital supply line from the Supercap but in doing so you’d effectively lock the amp to that power supply and it would no longer work with any device. So to help with backwards compatibility we believe it was the smarter decision to keep it in. However, whilst we don’t recommend it, if you choose to we can take away this functionality.

What difference will make if I only have a Hicap (or two)?

We’ve taken the opportunity to change a couple of circuit configurations so the 82 is more like the 252 in its filter section, this should provide an advantage whilst you save up to buy a Supercap but this will be required to get the full benefit.

Why can I trust you to do it properly?

All our engineers are ex-Naim factory and the two that designed and will be modifying your 82 worked there as engineers for several years rising to the highest position of Senior Test Engineer. In many cases, the amps we receive from servicing have been built or were tested by our engineers back in the 80 and 90s.

This expertise is invaluable when it comes to working on your amp particularly as these hold their value.

How does it compare to a 52?

We aren’t going to lie to you and say this is better than 52 because it isn’t. The 52 is a beautiful preamp that has an entirely different internal construction as a dual-mono pre-amp. It truly deserves its position as ‘top dog’. That said, our engineers do, believe this does a great job approaching 80% of the way to a 52.

Is the mod reversible?

Whilst there would be no reason to reverse this mod (is completely backwards compatible) we are able to reverse it, exchanging our new link plug for an original and rewiring it inside back to the original factory specifications.
